Activities

The Local Council believes in the importance of social and cultural activities in the village, as through these activities the citizen feels closer to the Council. All the events and activities organised by the Council are very well attended and sometimes the attendance surpasses every expectation.

These are some of the activities organised by the Council on an annual basis.

Carnival Competitions and Soiree

The Council organises an annual Carnival soiree in the village square. During the soiree, apart from an exhibition of various dances, competitions are held covering four categories, namely, that for the best float, that for the best grotesque mask, that for the best costume for children from outside the village and finally, for the most hilarious company involving some act of comedy. The Council rewards the winners by offering money for the best float and trophies to the winners of all other categories.

Visits to Malta and in Gozo

Every year the Local Council organises cultural visits to Malta and to some places in Gozo. The main aim of these visits is the furtherance of education. Keeping in mind the importance of social inclusion, the Council involves all its citizens in these activities avoiding any social distinction. As a result, children, youngsters and old people learn together. These visits place the educational aspect at the top of the agenda, hoping very much to eradicate the widespread mentality that a cultural visit is not complete unless it includes a visit to a market or a game of tombola. These visits are being very successful and the average attendance is that of about a hundred persons. When one considers that San Lawrence has a population of 500 people, the attendance of a hundred people for these visits is a very pleasing figure.

Meals on Wheels on Christmas Day and San Lawrenz Feast Day

For the past ten years, on Christmas Day and on the day we celebrate the feast of San Lawrenz, the Local Council distributed meals of wheels including hot dinners to all senior citizens in the village, who live on their own. The aim of the Council is to ensure that on these special days everyone enjoys a decent meal, hence creating a festive mood and alleviates loneliness. These meals are distributed personally by the Mayor and other Councillors. If anyone in the village has relatives living on their own and have not been benefitting from this service, they are kindly asked to contact the Council either by phoning number 21563556 or by Email: .

San Lawrenz Day

Every year in the beginning of June, the Council organises a number of events to celebrate the locality's special day known as "San Lawrenz Day". Through these events the Council celebrates the foundation of the Local Council in the village.

San Lawrenz Prize

Every year in the beginning of June the Council celebrates its foundation day. On that day the Council gives an account of all the work that has been completed and sets out its progamme for the next year. In this way the people are kept involved in the life of the Council and are also kept informed about the Council's activities. As a way of recognising Maltese society at large and inspired by the life of the village's Patron, St Lawrence, who in his life had a special place for those in need, the San Lawrenz Local Council organises a national contest with the name SAN LAWRENZ PRIZE ackowledging Maltese Organisations engaged in work with those who have special needs. So far this prize has been won by: The Ursoline Creche, Dar Merhba Bik, the Emigrants' Commission, the Gozo Association for Persons with Disability, the Hospice Movement, Dar tal-Providenza, the Gozo based organisation Friends of the Sick and the Elderly, the Little Sisters of the Poor, The Arka Foundation, the Oasi Foundation and Caritas. Through the reward of this prize, the Local Council aims at creating a consciousness among its people, that although they live in a small locality, they still belong to one country. Every person needs to play his or her part by contributing towards the general improvement of everyone's standard of living.

Distribution of Hampers to the Elderly

As part of the annual celebration of the feast of San Lawrenz, the Council distributes a hamper consisting of food and fruit to all the over eighties in the village. The elderly await eagerly for this activity, not just the receiving of the hamper but the appreciation that someone has remembered them and paid them a visit.

Educational Courses

The San Lawrenz Local Council is a firm believer in lifelong learning, which extends beyond the years spent at school. Apart from courses in activities such as ganutell, lacemaking, drawing and others, the Council also organises courses in literacy and also in the Maltese language, for all those adults who do not know how to read and write.

Children's Christmas Party

As part of the annual Christmas festivities, the Local Council organises a Christmas party for all the children of the village. This party is always welcomed by the children and it is always blessed with a hundred per cent attendance. Apart from food and drink, all the children are given a gift. These parties are never complete without the presence of Father Christmas himself and games which appeal to children of different ages. The party is normally organised in the week between Christmas and the New Year.

Christmas Get-Together for Village' Organisations

In order to thank all the organisations in the village, the Council, during the Christmas period organises a party specifically aimed at thanking their members. This activity succeeds in bringing together all the organisations in the village at least once a year and extends the gratitude of the Council for all the voluntary work that is done during the year.
